"Let me cite one final example of a national program that works, which I came to know well in Chicago. Communities In Schools, known as CIS, runs the nation's largest dropout prevention program, each year providing about two million students an array of integrated support services. In Chicago, CIS provides services to 64,000 students at 152 public schools, and it tripled in size in Chicago over the last decade. A third of the students in Chicago, 22,000 in all, went through conflict management, anger management, gang prevention, and bullying prevention programs last year." Read More

Newark, NJ - Essence Magazine Editor Emeritus Susan L. Taylor visited Newark's NJPAC for an intimate evening of discussion and inspiration. Baraka Sele and Susan L. Taylor discussed mentoring and the National Cares Mentoring Movement at the inaugural Alternate Routes Legacies and Legends discussion series.
Communities In Schools of New Jersey Mentoring Success Center was announced as one of the first New Jersey based partners of the newly launched Newark Cares (Local Affiliate of National Cares).

The Barat Foundation and Newark Arts Council invite you to capture the making of the Newark Art Parade Animodules. Each piece of portable art is produced by local youth, artists, schools and organizations. Module teams include students from Central High School, Science Park High School, the Communities In Schools of New Jersey Performance Learning Center/YES Center, and the Barat Foundation Art & Media Center.
Each module will march proudly down Broad Street on October 23 at 4PM to herald the opening of the citywide Open Doors Art Festival.
“We invite you to come visit our magical workshop, where the young people of Newark are working together side by side with artists, volunteers, and representatives of the business community, to create a Newark tradition that the city and her children will look forward to year after year,” added Chandri Barat.
The Barat Foundation Art Gallery will feature an art show, “Art as a Portal,” including world renowned local and international artists for the Newark Open Doors Art Festival.
