Communities In Schools (CIS) in the nation's leading community based organization helping kids succeed in school and prepare for life. From humble beginnings serving kids in storefront academies in Harlem over four decades ago, CIS has grown into a nationwide network providing services to more than two million young people and their families each year through state and local programs in over 3000 schools.

The secrets to CIS's success lies in the flexibility of the CIS model. CIS recognizes the diversity of each community it serves, and develops startegies and programs to meet specific community needs. What all CIS programs share is a mission, a methodology based on partnership and collaboration, and a philosophy that all kids need and deserve the Five Basics:

•a personal, one on one relationship with a caring adult

•a safe place to learn and grow

•a healthy start and a healthy future

•a marketable skill to use upon graduation

•a chance to give back to peers and community

As a part of a national organization, CISNJ enjoys powerful youth advocacy, national public/private partnerships, technical assistance and training, and state-of- the-art information and data collection.
